More than two dozen volunteers - the majority of citizens above - spent 750 hours in the 2010-2011 school year tutoring of first-and second-graders, Apollo, Nelson, Twain and Washington in eastern Maine Elementary School District 63, according to a presentation at the District 63 school board meeting.
The intergenerational "Make a Difference" volunteer program began in 2005 with the seniors to work with kindergarten students, said Judy Masur, who coordinated the effort since 2009.
The program provides a way for volunteers to come into schools and work directly with students, and providing volunteers with a sense of productivity, satisfaction and well-being, while enhancing the skills of students reading and reducing absenteeism.
